Media Statement

The African National Congress Professionals League (ANCPL) joins the Molewa family and the world by expressing our sadness and shock at the passing of a global environmentalist, Dr Bomo Edna Edith Molewa. As the ANCPL, we are shattered at the untimely passing of this distinguished professional.

Dr Molewa, a teacher and an educator who dedicated her time to teach the nation and went on to later become an outstanding environmentalist. The ANCPL also honours her professional contributions to South Africa and the world.

Dr Molewa’s professional skills made her a notable politician who contributed to the advancement of the National Democratic Revolution. As a skilled negotiator and a formidable unionist, Dr Molewa was at the forefront of the workers’ struggle. She was a member of the National Executive Committee and National Working Committee of the ANC. At the time of her passing, Dr Molewa also served as the chairperson of the ANC International Subcommittee on International Relations.

Dr Molewa’s professional depth and breadth gave our glorious movement, the ANC, a complete leader of a special type armed with professional skills which made her an exceptional outstanding leader of our times. Her professional leadership was acknowledged by great leaders and scholars around the world who bestowed great leadership responsibilities on her to lead worldwide committees like World Economic Forum (WEF) which respected her acumen on matters of sustainability, water, and climate change.

She chaired Abidjan Convention consisting of 38 African countries. A professional who became President of the African Ministers Council on Environment (AMCEN). She also served two terms as President of the African Ministers Council on Water (AMCOW).

She was also part of the World Water Council of WEF. An outstanding global professional leader who led the adoption of the historic Paris Agreement to combat climate change that was signed at the United Nations in April 2016.

The world has been robbed of a formidable leader who possesses a unique combination of skills and education. She was professionally gifted with rare talents. As ANCPL, we celebrate her professional skills and capabilities that she placed at the disposal of our movement, South Africa and the world.

We say farewell dear professional. The ANC needs more astute professionals like you. Go and join the Branch of the ANC in heaven, tell many astute ANC Professionals like President Pixley ka Isaka Seme, Doctor Alfred Bitini Xuma, Dr James Moroka, Reverend Zacchaeus Richard Mahababe, Philosopher John Dube, the intellectual and linguist Solomon Tshekisho Plaatje, Chief Albert Luthuli and the outstanding legal eagles OR Tambo and Dr Nelson Mandela and many others that when you left, the ANCPL had just unveiled itself to organize and mobilize professionals across the country behind the banner of the ANC.

Tell them that this is after the ANC lost elections in major cities where the urban working class is based. Tell them the ANCPL is a new hope in advancing people’s power through thought leadership and political clarity.

We shall honour you as honorary President in our first ANCPL conference.

On behalf of all Professionals in our country we say, Robala ka Kgotso Professional!
